Bill Burke/Sterling Pierce Co. profile

Bill Burke
Bill Burke will be the featured speaker at BIGNY's Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016 "President's Night" meeting. Here's a brief biographical profile of Mr. Burke:

Bill Burke is the owner of Sterling-Pierce Co., Inc., a Long Island-based firm with an established reputation as one of the country’s premier bound galley printers and short-run paperback books.

Born in Queens, New York, Burke lived in Maspeth, NY for 26 years. He earned a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Queens College/Ctiy University of New York and taught at the junior high school level in Nassau County. He and his wife Isabel are the proud parents of two daughters.

Bill Burke’s printing industry experience started with a position at the bound-galley printer Malarchy-Clark. In 1980, after the firm was purchased by DV Communications, Bill and his wife Isabel founded Sterling Pierce Co., Inc. The new company offered printing services, focusing on short-run bound galleys.

Initially, Sterling Pierce operated from Bill’s parents’ basement. These modest origins impressed upon the Burkes the vital importance of client relations and product quality. The business has grown over its 35-year history to become a respected bound galley printer, with 26 employees servicing publishers from Maine to Seattle.

In addition to their corporate success, the Burkes have received many community and service awards.  In 2012, Bill was named “Business Person of the Year” by the Nassau County Chamber of Commerce. In 1998, Sterling Pierce received the Certificate of Appreciation from the Community Mayors Children’s Fund “in recognition for their splendid contribution to the handicapped children of New York”.  In 1987 Bill and Isabel received “The Children of Ireland Award” for their efforts on behalf of underprivileged children in Ireland. Sterling Pierce is also a Corporate Cancer Research Sponsor for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Besides these activities, Bill Burke enjoys boating, fishing, and rooting for the New York Mets.
